Maine Coast Animal Rescue is a foster-based rescue which means we do not have a brick-and-mortar facility. All our animals are in homes throughout Maine until adopted. We do not have “hours of operation” and rely on volunteers who have stepped up to help us care for our dogs in addition to their busy lives.

Our adoption process consists of a vet check, landlord approval (if you rent), and a home visit/zoom visit to ensure our furry friends are going into a safe and loving home. We do require resident pets to be altered*, up to date on vaccines*, and maintain monthly flea/tick/heartworm prevention*.

*Documented medical reason is the only exception.

We place our dogs based on the best fit for them – not first come/first serve. If your application has been approved and you have been chosen to have a Meet & Greet, please know that we cannot hold dogs for more than 48 hours. We ask you to please be ready to adopt when applying. Fosters are not required to travel for Meet & Greets. Any travel on the foster’s part is at his/her discretion.

Minimum age to adopt is 22 years old.

*PLEASE NOTE: MCAR reserves the right to deny an application/adoption for any reason at any time. Please provide all information requested on the application and fill it out as detailed as possible. Adoption Forms must be filled out completely. If there is any missing information, we will not process that application and move on to the next applicant.

To get started:

Fill out an adoption application here.
Pass applicable checks (vet, landlord, and home visit)
If determined you are the best fit, set up a Meet & Greet within 48hrs
All members of your household, including dogs, must be present at the Meet & Greet.
If all goes well at Meet & Greet, sign the adoption contract, pay the fee and take your new family member home!

The adoption fee includes your new dog being up to date on age-appropriate vaccines, dewormed, spayed/neutered, and current on monthly preventives. Please note: That most puppies under the age of 6 months are likely to have parasites despite being dewormed. It takes regular deworming to eliminate parasites so if you adopt a puppy, please plan to get a fecal test done shortly after adoption to check if there are lasting parasites. The adoption fee also includes transport costs.

* MCAR does not adopt out sibling dogs

** We get a lot of inquiries and applications please know that we do try our best to get back to everyone, but we are a small fully volunteer-based rescue and sometimes we can not get back to everyone. Thank you for understanding.

BETTY

Pit, Female, 3 years old

Betty is Deaf. She trains with hand signals and knows yes, no, sit, wait, and bed. She is crate trained and house-trained. She always sits for treats and loves to high five.
She is a creature of habit so the sooner you establish a routine for her the better. She will own it and you will have it made!
She is a laid-back girl that loves to cuddle. She loves all people. She loves car rides.
She is happy to stay home and lounge on the couch or go on a jog around the block depending on your mood.
She loves playing with other dog friends but is not a fan of dominant dogs in her face.
Betty needs a cat free home.
While crated or unsupervised, Betty CANNOT have any kind of stuffed, rope, or rubber toys as she will eat it. She loves to play with toys while supervised. She does have some toys that are safe for her to have alone.
She cannot be off leash as it isn't safe for her.

Princess

Chihuahua Mix, Female, Senior

Princess is a senior chihuahua mix who was left by her owners at a veterinary office . She is the sweetest girl and gets along fine with other dogs . A quiet home would probably be best for this old gal .

Norman

Breed Unknown, Male, Senior 10+

This guy is 10+ years old . Pulled last minute from a crowded shelter in Mississippi right before he was supposed to be euthanized. Left by his owners with no name. We are calling him Norman

Apollo

Great Dane, Male, 2 years

Apollo is a 2 year old Great Dane looking for a foster home . He gets along with other dogs . Large dog or Dane experience required

Ben & Sam

Aussies, Males, 2 years

Ben and Sam will be arriving the first week of April. They are deaf Double Merle Aussies who are bonded. They are around 2yrs old and 40 pounds. They are great with everyone and everything. Very sweet boys. They have great leash manners. Ben and Sam love riding in the car. They have great house manners and are crate trained.

Maverick

Catahoula Mix, Male, 1 year

Notes from his southern foster: Maverick is a one-year-old pup with silver blue eyes. We think he’s a Catahoula mix because he is so laid back and submissive. All my pups are 25 pounds or so, some blind, deaf or full of arthritis. Maverick loves to play, and he will lay on the floor and let two or three pups nip and wrestle with him. Eats politely, never growled at me at any time. He likes to chew on any thing on the floor, but will leave alone the items I tell him to leave alone. Walks well on a leash. Not much of a barker. He will play with a toy by himself if he doesn’t have a playmate. He’s a clumsy guy, so his big paws may be dicey around kids under5. He really is a perfect dog for any family.

Tippy

Pitbull, Female, 14 Weeks

Note from foster:

She would make a great office puppy but she’s not big on change. She doesn’t bite and she is super gentle. She likes to cuddle. She will need a home with consistency. And bonus if they take her everywhere. She loves going for car rides. She’s calm and definitely loves to sleep! She is good with all animals including farm animals!

Layla

Terrier Mix, Female, 1 year

Momma Layla has to have her leg amputated so it will be a while until she is available. But this Momma is such a sweet girl.

Milo

Terrier Mix, Male, 10 Weeks

Milo does great with other dogs and is an absolute sweetheart. Milo is just as happy cuddling on the couch as he is running around playing with his toys. He is doing great outside.

Rocky is a confident, sweet, and friendly snuggler; pick him up and he relaxes right into you and licks your chin. He loves to be around people and watches everything you do with bright and curious eyes. His coat is thicker than some of his siblings so cooler evening temps don’t faze him. Ears forward, paws up, heart open: Rocky is ready for his forever home.
